Steps to Creating the Backyard Landscape of Your Dreams

We encourage clients to get a design for their backyard landscape if the scope of work merits it. If you already have an idea of a layout and style you are looking fo , a design may not be necessary. The steps below are typical in the process of creating your space.

Initial Consultation

At your first landscape design consultation, we focus on understanding your goal, budget and go through your inspiration photos. We also determine whether a design is required or not. It is common for a simple sketch to convey the layout of the space.

The purpose and general use of the space play into its design. Do you want to cook and entertain? Then a barbecue space and dining area should be a primary focus of the plan. If you prefer a quiet, relaxing place, adding privacy screening, softening plants, and water features help create an ambience that will set you in a relaxed state of mind.

To create an “outdoor room” experience, think of creating a similar feel as you experience indoors, but with the beauty and serenity of the outdoors. Determining the purpose of your space will help make the backyard part of the home rather than a separate place.

Site Survey and Assessment

A walk through your property for a site survey and assessment allows us to take measurements of your property, analyze the site for factors such as sun exposure, grading and topographical scope, as well as neighbouring views.

How much space there is to work with will play a significant role in the layout of your yard. Your designer can use walls and verticals to create interest and multiple “rooms” within a space. If it’s a large country property, then the scale of each area will be essential to consider.

The existing layout of your neighbourhood will also define how you will design the space. If your home has neighbouring homes with clear views of your backyard, then creating privacy screening is a top priority.

Design Process

A design is an extremely valuable tool to help you visualize your plans before construction begins. When building your landscape, a design will help you see a realistic view of your vision on paper in either 2D or 3D depending on your budget. There are three steps to our Landscape Design Process; conceptual design presentation, design presentation and final design presentation.

We present 2-3 design concepts to choose from at your Conceptual Design Presentation based on your input. Once you decide on your overall design, we discuss your likes, dislikes, and suggestions for adjustments at your following Design Presentation. This is a two-way conversation to get the design just right. Based on your feedback, our landscape designer will create your final landscape design and send you the plan for final approval at your Final Design Presentation.

This results in a completed project that fits your unique style and lifestyle needs.

Construction Contract Agreement

Once your final landscape design is approved, you sign our construction contract agreement, and our team gets to work!
